History, The Power of Thought and The Secret

Inspired by Andrew Carnegie, Napoleon Hill wrote the book Think and Grow Rich in 1947. In it he disclosed the secret formula that brought Andrew Carnegie his huge fortune; a formula that Mr. Carnegie thought should be shared; taught in public schools and colleges because if it was properly taught it would so revolutionize the entire educational system that the time spent in school could be cut in half.

The formula or the secret Mr.Hill described rested on the power of thought. Sound familiar? The essence of the secret formula according Napoleon Hill is: Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve ....another way of saying ask, believe and receive ?

Moreover, he reiterates this belief in the power of the mind when he says, Study the record of any man who achieves noteworthy success, and you will observe that he has control over his own mind, moreover that he exercises that control and directs it to the attainment of definite objectives. Without this control, success is not possible.

You either control your mind or it controls you. Is this not conscious and deliberate living ?

Learning To Live The Secret

To learn to live The Secret everyday, you must learn to apply the principles of the Law of Attraction. Self-help books come and go because knowing and understanding how to change one's life is not enough; it does not lead to a true and permanent transformation. The key is application. The only way to learn to live The Secret is to do it. You must conscientiously practice it daily. You've heard the old adage practice makes perfect. It's never been truer.

Learning theory is clear. There is really one way to learn how to do something and that is by doing it. If you wanted to learn to dance, you dance. Reading a book or simply listening to a how-to lecture is not enough to become proficient. Noted psychologist William Glasser tells us we learn and retain:

10% of what we read
20% of what we hear
30% of what we see
50% of what we see and hear
70% of what we discuss with others
80% of what we personally experience
95% of what we teach

Therefore, learning to live The Secret everyday with the goal of making it part of your life requires active participation ...that is using the principles daily. This is the foundation upon which My Secret Workbook was designed. It is an interactive experience in which the reader learns by doing. It is the tool to live the life you want; to make a permanent transformation.

Practice Living in the Moment

The joy of life is the journey. Remember your destination is always Now, not tomorrow. Everyday deliberately reach to bring happiness to yourself by focusing on the positive.

As a mindfulness practice, try becoming the conscious observer of your thoughts, feelings and actions today. Notice how much of your energy is being stolen from you by the time bandits of the past and the future.

Make a conscious choice to step into the Now, and do so by breathing consciously. Watch your in breaths and your out breaths as they effortlessly flow. Begin to experience the joy of simply being alive in this holy instant and feel the energy of ease and lightness wash over you. __Dennis Merritt Jones, The Acorn, March 27,2008

The Test: Are You Living in the Moment?

A great deal of what people say, think, or do is actually motivated by fear, which of course is always linked with having your focus on the future and being out of touch with the Now. As there are no problems in the Now, there is no fear either.

The test to determine if you are living in the moment:

Ask yourself: Is there any joy, ease, and lightness in what I am doing?

If there isn't, then time is covering up the present moment, and life is being perceived as a burden or struggle. ___Eckhart Tolle

Practice Each Day to LIVE Meaningfully

5 Paths to a Meaningful Life

1. Be True To Yourself
The first secret I learned from these interviews is Be true to yourself. Each one of us is on a unique human journey and the path to true happiness is to be true to ourselves. This means knowing what brings us happiness and focusing our life on what matters to us. It means reflecting on a regular basis as to whether our life fits our soul. In our daily lives it means knowing what brings us joy and ensuring that we fill our life with the right elements. It also means following our unique destiny. One of the people I interviewed was a Latino woman who talked about the importance of following our “destina.” The idea is that each of us has a path that is most true to us, which is not so much a destination as a way we are meant to be in the world. For example, I am a teacher and philosopher by nature and when I stay close to that path I experience true joy. Being true to self often means drowning out other voices that would ask us to live their dreams instead of ours. Ron, a gifted chiropractor, told me the story of how he planned to become a medical doctor but when he visited a chiropractor shortly before starting medical school he discovered a profession that connected to his true self. “Others told me I was crazy but I knew it was my path.” He told me that to follow your heart you must have the “discipline to listen and the courage to follow.” This means asking if the life we are living is true to our deepest sense of self and it sometimes requires a step of courage to follow our soul. Are you being true to yourself right now?
2. Leave No Regrets
The second secret I learned is to Leave No Regrets. It seems to me that what we fear most as we age is not death, but rather to come to the end of our life feeling that we never truly lived. The saddest words ever spoken at the end of life are “I wish I had…” Tom, a native healer, told me that the great fear at the end of life is “the great incompleteness; that you did not do what you came here to do.” One of the most interesting things I discovered in talking to 235 wise people is that almost no one regretted risks they took that did not work out and most said they wished they had risked more. When I asked these people about major crossroads in their lives, many of them talked about taking risks-sometimes large and sometimes small-which wound up bringing great happiness. One of the keys to moving towards what we want instead of what we fear is to focus on the best possible result and not the worst. Are you going for what you truly want in your life or acting with fear.
3. Become Love
Become Love was the third secret I learned from these people. C.
Yet the most interesting thing I uncovered is that being a loving person, the choice to give love, is even more important in determining happiness than getting it. These people talked to me about the importance of choosing love and kindness as your way in the world. They taught me that when we choose to be a loving person we find a deep sense of meaning in life.
4. Live the Moment
The fourth secret was to Live the Moment. One of the most common things people told me was how fast life goes by and how important it is to enjoy each moment. One woman told me “when you are young you think sixty years is an incredibly long time but when you get there you realize it was only a moment.” Among the secrets they shared were how important it is to live in the present, to fully enjoy whatever experience you are having (and not to wish you were somewhere else), and to live with gratitude focusing on what you are grateful for rather than what you don’t have. They told me that we have no power over the past and little power over the future. Many of them said that whenever you find yourself saying “I will be happy when or I will be happy if” that it is important to remember that happiness is a choice we make inside. One woman told me: “You have to stop judging your life and start living your life. Stop keeping score trying to decide if you are winning. Instead live each day fully and stay in the moment.” Are you living with gratitude right now, focusing on enjoying your life rather than judging it?
5 Give More Than You Take
The fifth and final secret was to Give More Than You Take. When I asked people what gave their life the greatest meaning, people told me again and again people that being of service and knowing that you made things better because you were here was by far the greatest source of meaning. I learned that whether in career or personal life, that it is what we give not what we take that gives life meaning. Many of them also reminded me that we have little control over what we get from the world every day (whether people will love us, whether we will win the lottery, etc.) but we have complete control over what we give to the world (whether we choose to be kind, charitable, and to give to others). These people reminded me that everything we take from the world dies with us, but everything we give to the world gets recycled. A wise woman named Susan told me that “when we are young we cry for ourselves but as we age we learn to cry for the world.” Indeed all the spiritual traditions remind us that true happiness comes from focusing on being of service and in the process joy finds us. Are you focused on giving or getting each day?
You Must Live the Secrets
What I also discovered is that it is not enough to know the secrets, we must live them. One man told me “many of us know what is important but it is not enough to know, you have to put these things into practice.” These people taught me a great deal about how to live the secrets as well and I share many of their techniques in the book. One of my favorites was sixty-four year old Joel who told me about how he reminds himself each day to live the moment. “When I wake up the first thing I do is say a prayer thanking God and the universe that I get to live one more day and I pray that I will treat it as a gift. At night, just before I go to bed, I have a time of meditation and remember all the things that I am grateful for that day and ask for one more day.”

Pay Attention To Living: Tips For Simplifying Your Life

Too often we get caught up in doing and not living our lives. We are not consciously or deliberately living but unconsciously acting as taskmasters. We fill up our lives passing time, accomplishing to-dos and chores and not being present in the moment. We need to pay attention to living. Here are some basic tips we found in a blog to get started:

We are such an advanced and civilized nation that we are actually going backwards. Our lifestyles are so complicated and filled with so many to-dos that we have left the basic parts of survival behind us. So, here are a few daily tips to simplify, tune out, and perhaps live a little more like our natural selves.
1. Turn off the TV. I just had a baby 14 days ago and I could have just vegged out in front of the 500 channels available to me at the touch of a button. I was amazed at how quickly time flew when I got lost in the TV vortex. What about going outside and taking a walk? Or better yet talking to your partner or reading to one of your children?
2. Limit the time you spend online, another time sucker. You can sit down to answer email, and hit a gossip site. Before you know it, an hour has just flown by. Computers are a great tool, but we need to keep how much of a role they play in our lives in check.
3. Don't nuke your food. We don't need to go and light a fire to cook a meal, but how about avoiding the microwave? Do you ever ask yourself what's in the food I'm eating? We are so civilized that we can't even pronounce the stuff we are putting in our bodies. Simplify: veggies, fruit, protein, and a non-white starch.
4. Did cavemen drink soda and frozen juices? I know they taste great, and hit the spot, but when did we stop drinking water? Entire cities were established around a good water source. Why don't we still think it's important? All I'm suggesting is stop making the sugary drinks the means in which we hydrate (including diet, they fatten you up too). How about having them as a treat and drink water the rest of the time? By the way, your kids are picking up their habits from you.
5. Stop and take a deep breath. We are all in such a hurry: The traffic is jammed, little junior has nine after school activities he's involved with, your cell is connected to your ear and we are on the go, go, go. Is it all necessary? Is there a way to simplify? If you can steal 5 to 30 minutes a day to just stop and meditate, or pray, do it. Think about what you are grateful for. What you dream of and want to achieve for yourself and your family, and take a few deep breathes. By the way, you are not a bad person if you say no once in a while.
6. Move. Part of being able to handle the intense pace of life is to be strong enough physically to deal with it. Forget thinking about exercise as a luxury that you don't have time to get to. Start viewing physical wellness as a must, and a right that we all have in order to enjoy this life. In the old days you had to move to survive. Now we just hop in our car and make our way to the drive thru. I don't believe that's the way it was intended to work best for us. You ever see how beautifully liquid your kids are and how well they sleep after a day of playing outside at the park or beach? Now that is the way life was designed.
I know it's impossible to simplify our modern day lives to the point of living in a log cabin, but we could learn something about ourselves from our primal roots. Do you ever just stop and wonder what it's all about? What are we really rushing around like lunatics for? How come we are not making our health a priority and taking better care of ourselves?

How do we Teach Our Children to Live by The Law of Attraction?

I don't know how many of you had an opportunity to watch Joanne on The Naked Salon (see background info on March 14th blog... sorry, but no... not a naked show-lol) but it was a fun show and a great topic was discussed. For those of you who didn't see it , check out youtube.com where clips will be posted in the near future under Tne Naked Salon- Teach Our Children Well.

In essence we discussed how do we teach our children to be joyful and productive adults ? I shared, that in my experience as both a parent and educator, the best teaching strategy there is, is teaching by example. As parents we need to consciously parent, remembering that our children will do as we do and not as we say. With this in mind, we can raise empowered, loving and giving children by modeling those qualities we want to see in our kids. We need to be mindful of what we do. We need to create environments that are warm and accepting to promote feelings of security and self-confidence. We do this by setting limits for behavior, promoting self-esteem, encouraging open communication and the expression of feelings; and lastly by modeling and teaching positive social skills. There's no doubt that if we as parents live the secret everyday, our children will follow in our footsteps and do the same. The Law of Attraction will then respond, giving them the life they want.

The Road to Living The Secret: Working Hard ??

More than ever in history... we are working more hours in a day than ever before. Thus the term 24/7 to descrbe the work week, has been 'coined.' With little balance or chances to relax, people are working 10,12+ hours a day. The question is are people truly living a happy life? Is this the way to find happiness?

According to The Secret, your job is to be a powerful creator, to think positive thoughts (be happy NOW) that will create the reality you want. Those thoughts inspire action, action that is natural and effortless, without struggle. This is because you are acting to receive. You are "going with the flow." The universe is bringing to you what you want through the action inspired within you. When you are ready to receive, opportunities will appear: an impulse to act will emerge from within. It is the universe that is helping you to design your action plan as long as you ask, believe and are ready to receive.

To reiterate: it is the Law of Attraction that inspires the action- brings those ideas to you as to what to DO to get what you want. However, unfortunately too often we live our lives thinking that things and people outside of ourselves will bring us happiness. So we engage in a lot of "doing"- working hard and struggling to have what we think will make us happy. We believe that if we work hard, we can get what we want. Then we can be happy. But it is just the opposite. In essence, we want to be happy NOW, to bring all those things into our lives.

What Would You Do? The "Natural Order of Things"

We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the "natural order of things." So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

What would you do? You make the choice.

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?" The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. "I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child."

Then he told the following story: Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?" Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps. Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning." Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all teammates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball ... the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay!" Shay reached third base because the opposing short stop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third! Shay, run to third!" As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, "Shay, run home! Run home!" Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

"That day", said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, "the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world".Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

96. Write your script. When you see things you don’t want, don’t think about them, write about them, talk about them, push against them, or join groups that focus on the don’t wants… remove your attention from don’t wants.. and place them on do wants.
97. We are mass energy. Everything is energy. EVERYTHING.
98. Don’t define yourself by your body .. it’s the infinite being that’s connected to everything in the universe.
99. One energy field. Our bodies have distracted us from our energy. We are the infinite field of unfolding possibilities. The creative force.
100. Are your thoughts worthy of you? If not - NOW is the time to change them. You can begin right where you are right now. Nothing matters but this moment and what you are focusing your attention on.

Ask Yourself: What Am I Doing ?

As a follow-up to our last blog on Happy Living:Free Yourself from Your Mind, we received a comment from another blogger, beautifully written that captured the essence of our communication with a great tip on how to live consciously: Just ask yourself 'what am I doing?'
An excerpt from it is printed here:

How do we live in the now and have that electrifying experience? It has to do with our awareness and our surrounding. We have senses to help us navigate through life and we must learn to harness them for our benefit. Most of the time, we are doing things and have no inner connection to what we are saying, thinking or believing. Our emotions to our inner trait behavior are demonstrated by what we see, hear, smell, taste or touch. The “now experience” has to do with things you can see, hear, touch, taste or smell. This is the realm we live in and you can only respond to your five physical senses. So, you must constantly ask yourself” what am I doing?”This way you can involve or engage your sensory system in what ever you are doing. Have you ever had a conversation with some one and your mind was taking a walk? I started involving my five senses and being more aware of people, things and situations.

Happy Living: Free Yourself from Your Mind

Whether we call it The Secret, The Law of Attraction or Awakening- the principles are the same for living a happy life. We must live consciously and deliberately to truly have the life we want. Living in the present- the here and now - means being aware or in other words being awake. We can programour thoughts and ourselves to have the life we want. Unfortunately for many of us we aren't living our life with focus or attention to the now, but rather by default. Our thoughts control us rather than we controlling our thoughts. We follow old patterns from our childhood, influenced by society and react to life on auto-pilot. We fill up our lives with way too many thoughts and activities.

We must stop and remind ourselves that: we are powerful creators with powerful minds that we can control to design our ideal life. But we must be in a state of awakening as Eckhart Tolle calls it to find the peace within and a life of joy and abundance. Eckhart Tolle suggests practicing living in the moment by taking any routine activity and living it your fullest attention. He says measure your success by the degree of peace that you will feel. Choose a couple of activities daily to do this with. Here are some examples:

Everytime you walk up and down the stairs in your house or place of work, pay close attention to every step, every moment, even your breathing. Be totally present.

When you wash your hands, pay attention to all the sensory perceptions associated with the activity: the sound and the feel of the water, the movement of your hands, the scent of the soap and so on.

When you get into your car, after you close the door, pause for a few seconds and observe the flow of your breath. Become aware of a silent but powerful sense of presence.

Self-Help Book...Is THE SECRET Here to Stay ?

Over 8 million people have read or watched the DVD on The Secret. People swear that it has changed their lives. But will it make lasting change ? Will people actually experience a permanent transformation since learning about The Law of Attraction ? In other words, is The Secret and its principles and teachings here to stay? Or is it just another popular (very, very popular) self-help book?

I love self-help books...I've certainly read my share in my lifetime. They make me feel good. They tend to validate what we are doing; inspire us with ideas for change and give us an insight into human nature if written correctly. Most of all they give us ways to help ourselves change into a better person. And who isn't looking for self-improvement? For discovery and growth?

The problem I've had with almost all self-help books is that immediately after reading them, I am 'gung-ho.' I've highlighted all the most important lines in the book so I can go back and review them; so I don't forget them. Do I go back...no. But for the most part this excitement and talking about the book lasts a few weeks and slowly the book fades in my memory to be forgotten in about 6 months.

I think this is because just reading a book doesn't bring change until you incorporate it into your life and actually experience it. That's why my sister and I wrote a workbook. We truly beleive that learning to live The Secret everyday with the goal of making it part of your life requires active participation or at a minimum personal experience with it. It has to be an interactive experience in which the reader learns by doing. Practice it enough and it becomes a habit- a way of life. Then and only then will it make lasting change in your life.

So in answer to the question.... Is it here to stay? For me the answer is yes. I have committed to and am practicing its principles everyday. For others- I hope so, but that is a personal choice. The key for change is to 'live it.' That can be in any way that works for you as long as you stay focused and live deliberately.

Take A Happy Pill Every Morning: To Last the Whole Day

Begin your day with a happy pill that'll last the entire day.

Create Your Day Everyday

Since you can deliberately build the life you want, consider starting step by step by creating each day, everyday in advance. By positively thinking about your day, you set up a wonderful feeling tone. Focusing on a positive, productive day in advance is a great way to attract the things you want into your life everyday.

Take a few minutes each morning before getting out of bed to paint a picture of your day. See it unfolding in your mind, the way you want it to turn out. Expect it. When you start expecting things, you are creating. As you see these things (in your mind) feel the associated feelings. Feel good that each one of these things is happening the way you want it to now.

The Law of Attraction- Act Happy to Be Happy

The Law of Attraction tells us that which is like unto itself, is drawn. In other words, like attracts like and that which you focus on and act like will manifest into your life in the form of thoughts, feelings, events or actions. Here's an interesting excerpt from The Family Desk Reference to Psychology, by Chuck T. Falcon ...a good tool to use to get out of a funky mood or away from negative/depressive thoughts.
Act Happy to Be Happy

The fastest way to change an emotion is often simply to act the way you want to feel. Act happy, smile regularly, act friendly toward other people, and participate in plenty of interests and activities, including fun things such as dancing. Don't wait to be in the mood to do these things-you may never feel like it. Depressed people who keep practicing these behaviors find themselves feeling more cheerful. With practice, these behaviors gradually become more comfortable and natural. Other people generally respond in positive ways to these changes, so you receive more pleasure and satisfaction in your life from them. Work on improving nonverbal behaviors that convey depression. Don't use a slow, quiet, bored, monotonous tone of voice. Show some pitch variation and enthusiasm in it. Use erect posture rather than drooping posture with downcast head and eyes. Use good rates of eye contact with other people and don't frown.

Anti-Secret: A Cult or a Good Thing ???

Imagine a World Where Everyone Followed The Secret- A Cult or a Good Thing ?

It has become an international phenonmenon. The Secret has been on best-seller lists now for over a year. But what amazes us most: is that for all the fans and readers it has attracted the amount of skepticism and criticism it has drawn. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium- you love it or hate it. But our question is WHY?

The other day I (Joanne) asked a school psychologist I work with if she had read The Secret...Adamantly she responded, No I'm rather skeptical of it. Others (just read the reviews on Amazon) call it scary, a scam, a self-help fraud and a cult. Why are there so many naysayers?

We do beleive Rhonda Byrne’s book did something fabulous in bringing these ideas to the masses but we think she ‘dumbed down’ its principles though in the process. Her oversimplification of the Law of Attraction ( a boy wishing for a bicycle and magically it appears) and overemphasis on getting for 'Me' ... the material things ...to make her point has drawn her much criticism from people. Many critics have chosen to focus on the the Hollywood 'schtick' presentation in the DVD, the exaggerated examples and lack of a substantive explanation.

As much as we can understand these attacks, we remain grateful that she’s even introduced the Law of Attraction to the world because we beleive the world will be a better place for it and help people create better lives for themselves. We choose to focus on its positive messages. To us it is a message of hope. We, like its other 8 million or more readers and watchers have simply been attracted to the messages about taking control of your life, your own thoughts, appreciating yourself and others, being thankful for what you have and most importantly seeing that the glass half-full. In a nutshell, for us it is really about empowerment. It's about taking responsibility for your life, awakening to and living life ‘alive’ – consciously and deliberately. How can this be damaging?

We personally wish the WHOLE WORLD followed principles of The Law of Attraction- we might come close to John Lennon’s vision in his song Imagine.... a good thing.
